Duluth Rally Marks the Anniversary of George Floyd's Murder

May 25 marked the one year anniversary of the police murder of George Floyd.  Across the country people gathered to mark the tragic anniversary.  It was no different in the Twin Ports.  A spirited group of about three dozen folks gathered at 7:30pm at the Clayton, Jackson & McGhie Memorial.  Folks exchanged how they were feeling.  Some brought food and water to share.  Others brought flowers for the memorial.

At 7:45pm the group took to the street and marched through downtown Duluth and Canal Park, weaving their way back to the CJM Memorial.  For the bulk of the march we were silent, though for the last nine minutes, we loudly chanted.  The response from motorists and pedestrians that we passed was far more positive than negative, and a few folks even joined our march for part of the route.

The final part of the event was an open mic where folks were invited to share their thoughts on everything, especially on how things have changed or not changed since the death of Floyd.  Veronica D., one of the main organizers, shared some concerning stories about the extra attention she and other organizers have received from police and others in the community.  Others talked about the changes they've seen in the hiring practices of local non-profits, the new relationships they have formed through all of the recent organizing, and the need for unity.

Also on hand were some of the student organizers from the May 13 Denfeld High School BLM walkout.  They shared their experiences in organizing the 100 student walkout, which was an amazing event, but that also triggered a racist backlash against the organizers from of the students and others in the community

All in all it was a very powerful event, but the stories shared, and modest numbers show how far we have to go in making sure that the systemic change that is needed continues to get the attention that it needs.  Thank you to all of the organizers and participants!  La lutta continua/the struggle continues!
